Overall, SAS is about 11 years behind R and S-Plus in statistical capabilities (last year it was about 10 years behind) in my estimation. -- Frank Harrell

The R project is a vast open-source statistical package, which miles ahead of any other statistical package in terms of its power and flexibility. Its only disadvantage? You have to write commands. In other words, you have to actually understand what you are doing, instead of blindly clicking around. There are currently more than 1000 packages available for it.

Task Views for particular tasks. Many manuals, books and other documentation. The FAQs. Rnews, a valuable source of information. A gallery showcasing the graphs that R can produce. The JSS features R packages regularly. Let's not forget the R-wiki. Finally, R and the FDA.

Books

This is limited to the books I have and have looked at. Introductory books: Dalgaard; MASS goes a lot further; Maindonald and Braun. For graphics, the books by Paul Murrell and Deepayan Sankar are a must have. For mixed effects models, the book by Pinheiro and Bates is excellent.
