Avery Origins Hypothesis
What follows is sheer speculation. I am publishing it here because
other people who have studied Avery or Amery genealogy may be able to
shed
some light and clear this up in a factual way. My hypothesis is simply
that the Amery and Avery families of Devonshire may be the same family,
and that is based purely on my first study of the Bishops Tawton Parish
Register, which seems to show the name Amery disappearing and the name
Avery appearing at about the same time. Please comment, and provide
other
information.
EARLY AMERY (AMERIE)/AVERY TIMELINE
(All Bishops Tawton Register, unless stated otherwise.)
-
1607-1624 John Amery has seven children, all girls except Hugh, b.1614
(wife's name not given).
-
Nov. 29, 1619 Joane Amery, daughter of John, dies.
-
Aug. 8, 1638 Hugh Amery m. Margaret Moore
-
Children:
-
Elinor, b. Feb. 9, 1638/9 [i.e. 1639 by modern calendar]
-
John, b. Dec. 20, 1640
-
Johane, b. Feb. 19, 1642/3
-
April 26, 1645 Elinor dies
-
Oct. 12, 1646 Johane dies
-
Apr. 25, 1651 Emolt (?), wife of John Amerie [sic] dies
-
Sept. 4, 1653 John Amory [sic] dies (probably the first John Amery
mentioned
above)
-
June 7, 1680 Margaret, wife of Hugh Amery dies
-
Mar. 1, 1684 Hugh Ammery [sic] dies
-
Jan. 16, 1690 John Avery marries Frances Rogers (first record of the
Avery
name in B.T. register, though it was earlier in other registers
nearby.
The coexistence of the name may of course mean that I have just missed
the genealogical link; but it also could mean, in a time--as
already
demonstrated--of very loose loyalty to the spelling of a family name,
that
a common name nearby was an easy "mistake" to slide into.)
-
Children:
-
Elizabeth, b. July 8, 1692
-
John, b. Nov. 5, 1694
-
Jan. 29, 1699/1700 Margaret Ammery dies [last Ammery etc. record]
-
[Now who was she? Did Hugh and Margaret have new kids after the
daughters
died? And whatever happened to their son John? No death record as of
yet
for him, and no separate birth record for John Avery. Could John Amery
be the grandfather of John Avery?]
-
Aug. 7, 1714 Frances Rogers Avery dies
-
Dec. 31, 1719 John Avery dies
-
Feb. 2, 1729 John Avery (b. 1694) m. Hannah Stephens
[I need to also check the Stephens name pre-1730. I should note that
I haven't found any children for John and Hannah Avery in the B.T.
register,
and if that holds then this entire timeline to date is meaningless--but
their children might have been baptized somewhere else.]
- Sept. 3, 1740 Hannah Stephens Avery dies
-
June 26, 1759 John Avery dies
[Now this is what I need more information on: If we're related to the
John Avery line, and I'm guessing we are, there needs to be a male born
to John and Hannah between 1729 and 1740, who would get married
sometime
around 1760 and then father Thomas Avery, who was born in 1772 or
1773.]
- Between Aug 2, 1772 and Aug 1, 1773 Thomas
Avery
born
-
April 12, 1796 Thomas Avery m. Dolly Searle
-
Children:
-
John b. Feb. 12, 1797
-
Thomas b. Apr. 8, 1798
-
Mary b. Feb. 20, 1803 (witness at Sarah's wedding)
-
Hannah b. Dec. 9, 1804
-
Sarah b. Feb. 10, 1807
-
Samuel b. Aug 21, 1808 (died 9/1/1829--gravestone at B.T.)
-
Joshua, b. Apr. 8, 1810 [first use of that name?]
[Note, in connection with speculation above about Thomas Avery's
grandparents,
the presence of John and Hannah among his children's names. Sarah and
Samuel
were Searle names, along with John also.]
