What is Vault?

Vault is a Web and File server that is provided for all hanover student and faculty. It allows everyone to have webspace that is accessably at http://vault.hanover.edu/~username. The files can be uploaded to vault by a FTP client, or by browsing vault directly from any lab computer. The files would be placed into the public_html directory of your home directory.

How do I access a person’s web pages?

If you are looking for a particular person's web pages, the syntax for the URL is:

http://vault.hanover.edu/~username/

Where username is replaced by the person's email address without the @hanover.edu

Example: The web page for somebody@hanover.edu would be http://vault.hanover.edu/~somebody

 

How is it organized?

Each user of vault will have the following directory setup for them by default as follows:

            -User home

                        -BACKUP

                        -public_html

                                    -protected

What is my username and password?

Your username and password are the same as your email without the @hanover.edu, and your email password. When you are prompted for your username and password enter campus\username for your username, and your email password.

How do I access my home directory?

On Campus

            Windows XP

Vault can be accessed by going to start->run in Windows XP and typing \\vault.

Windows Vista/7/8/8.1

Press the Windows key and type \\vaultEnter campus\username and your password.

Campus Computer Labs

Press the Windows key and type \\vault

Off Campus

            Web

All files that are placed in the public_html folder can be accessed at http://vault.hanover.edu/~username/.

            FTP

Your entire home directory is can be accessed by FTPing to ftp://vault.hanover.edu

What is the BACKUP directory?

Every night the contents of your home directory are copied into the BACKUP directory where there is only read only permission. This is so if you accidently delete a file, or want yesterday’s copy of a file you can retrieve it from the BACKUP folder.

What is the public_html directory?

The public_html directory in your home directory is a place where you can put .html, .htm, .php, and .pl, and have the files accessible at http://vault.hanover.edu/~username. The default view is a directory listing. If a file named index.html, or index.php, then that will be the file that is shown by default.

What is the protected directory inside the public_html directory?

The protected directory inside vault is a secure web folder that you can place files into. These files can be accessed at http://vault.hanover.edu/~username/protected using only your username and password.

Does it have FTP access?

Yes, vault can be accessed off campus by using ftp://vault.hanover.edu. This is already setup with your username and password.

Does it have SSH access?

Vault does have SSH access, but it is not turned on for every user by default. If you would like it turned on, you can contact the Hanover I.T. department at help@hanover.edu.

Does it have MySQL Databases?

Vault does have MySQL Databases, but you will have to contact the Hanover I.T. department to setup. You can contact the Hanover I.T. department at help@hanover.edu.
