Clark, Smith Family History Homepage

PLEASE NOTE:  THIS PAGE MOVED TO A NEW SERVER AND IT IS TAKING AWHILE TO GET ALL LINKS CORRECTED--THERE ARE THOUSANDS, AND IT HAS TO BE DONE (AS FAR AS I CAN FIGURE OUT) MANUALLY, ONE AT A TIME.  IF YOU FOLLOW A LINK AND IT TAKES YOU TO AN http://smith.hanover.edu/ ADDRESS YOU MAY EITHER GET NO PAGE AT ALL OR ONE THAT IS NO LONGER BEING EDITED.  TRY REPLACING THE FIRST PART OF THE ADDRESS WITH http://vault.hanover.edu/~smith/ , WHICH SHOULD TAKE YOU TO THE CORRECT PAGE.  IF YOU HAVE TIME AND ARE SO INCLINED, FEEL FREE TO WRITE ME AT smith@hanover.edu TO TELL ME ABOUT FAULTY LINKS, OR ESPECIALLY ABOUT PAGES STILL MISSING AFTER YOU HAVE MADE THAT CHANGE.  THANKS.

This page records the genealogy and family history of Joshua Avery Smith, Jr. (1912-1989) and Elma Clark Smith (1911-1985), who were married in Staten Island, N.Y. in 1936, and lived most of their lives in Pocomoke City, Md., where they raised six children.

Family members, please read on. For genealogists, the principal names here, in addition to Clark and Smith, are Avery, Coddington, Cox, Finley, Gibbons, Harlan(d), McGrew, Ong(e), Skinner, Tingley, Wilder, Williams, and Winder; and you may now cut to the chase. If it turns out you ARE related, however distantly, I hope you'll be back in touch!

Most of the genealogical information here has been gathered by Joshua Avery Smith, III. The page is maintained and updated by Jonathan Clark Smith, who welcomes all comments, corrections, new information, or photographs. I started the page in the summer of 1997, and am still trying to catch up with a huge pile of stuff Josh has sent me, so please be patient and check back now and then. Even better, write and request an update on a particular link, and I will do that one next.

I have resorted to this format, not to be trendy, but with the conviction that this particular type of information needs to be made accessible at least to members of this very large family, and this is the best and quickest way to do it. In any printed form it would be obsolete as soon as published, and Josh keeps uncovering stuff so fast that the mere job of organization would be formidable. As a website, all the known information (once it's on here) can remain in place and relatively easy to sift through, even as changes continue to be made. We can, in other words, continue construction of this document as long as there are people to do it, without ever interrupting anyone's reading. And since there are now thousands of genealogists on the web, we improve the chances of paths crossing and (to mix the metaphor) more pieces of the puzzle falling into place.

The page can be used in a number of different ways. Family members or people with a casual interest in this family's history may wish to begin with the genealogical chart from which links may be made to the biography page for any name on the chart. Visitors with a more general genealogical interest may wish to check the alphabetical listing of names below, also linked to biography pages. This list, with dates and birthplaces, will also provide a general overview of the family's migratory pattern.

The biography pages will of course vary in detail, but my hope (if I live long enough) is ultimately to have branches from those pages leading to descriptions of home towns and historical events, actual wills and other documents, and photographs. I will be happy for anything you wish to contribute, especially if you scan it first and send it in digital form (but I can also scan things pretty quickly and get them right back to you).

There are a few other features here, especially for family and friends, before you get going on the history.
