Arthurian Websites and Pages
Websites
Listed below are sites
that offer a variety of information about Arthur;
sites that focus exclusively on aspects covered
under other categories ("primary sources,"
"bibliography," etc.) are not mentioned.
I have also avoided duplicating descriptions,
concentrating instead on aspects not covered by
these categories.
The Camelot Project
Outstanding site, if not
the glitziest in design. Contains texts, images,
bibliographies and basic information. The Main Menu
link will take you to a mini-encyclopedia of
Arthurian characters, symbols, and places (about
half completed).
Early
British Kingdoms Web Site
"The only Web Site totally
dedicated to the Early Celtic Kingdoms of the Island
of Britain & its diminutive counterpart across the
Channel."
In addition, you will find
information on Celtic Saints, St. Joseph
of Arimathea, Pre-Roman Celtic Tribes &
Kingdoms, Celtic Ancestor Gods, and
Nennius' Twenty-Eight Cities of Britain.
An excellent resource is the Guest Articles
area, where you can find online essays contributed by
various hands.
Beyond all this, there is
an excellent section on the Historical Arthur,
actually covers more than just the historicity of
Arthur: "Popular Arthur," "Arthur the Myth,"
"Early References to a Real Arthur," "Arthur the
General," "Arthur the King," "Arthur's
Battles," "Arthur's Genealogy," "Arthurian Literary
Characters," "Arthurian Places to Visit," "Arthur and
Archaeology," "Aspects of the Arthurian Legend," "An
Arthurian Bibliography," "Selected Arthurian Related
Sites," and "Arthurian Guest Articles."
Tom Green's "Arthurian Resources"
Short on flash but long on
substance. Of special interest is the discussion of Myrddin
(Merlin). Three interesting areas are still
under construction include Arthurian Characters
("An alphabetical guide to the various characters that
play a part in the early Arthurian legend and their
nature," which as of 7/5/2000 includes Arthur; Cai and
Bedwyr / Kay and Bedivere; Gwalchmei m. Gwyar /
Gawain; Gwenhwyfar / Gwenivere; Lancelot du Lac;
Llacheu m. Arthur; Madawg m. Uthyr; Medraut /
Mordred; and Uthyr Pendragon); Arthurian
Folklore ("A new look at the Arthur of popular
legend in the light of recent research"); and Concepts
of Arthur ("A detailed examination of the
Arthurian legend and the nature of Arthur in it").
King
Arthur Pages at Britannia.com
These folks want to get you
interested in visiting "Arthurian Britain," so the
content is hardly without bias. However, they
have some useful resources, including sections
on Arthurian Travels and Arthurian
Biographies (blurbs on Arthur, Merlin,
Guinevere, Ambrosius Aurelianus,
Vortigern, Hengest, Geoffrey of
Monmouth, and Gerald of Wales). Particularly
helpful are Arthurian resources (G. Ashe
Interview; A list of legendary British kings from
Geoffrey of Monmouth's "History"; A brief reading
list, indexed by author, covering history,
archeology, reference, and novels; and Arthur
Lit. for the young); and Other History
(resources for the British church, monarchs,
documents, timelines, time period indexes, and
bibliographies).
Celtic Twilight
Very good all-around site
with an interesting section on " Art, Poetry, Music,
& Hollywood" (includes a very nice selection of
Arthurian art).
King
Arthur & the Matter of Britain
Well-designed pages that
aim to provide links to the best Arthurian websites,
with entries on General Sources, History
& Archaeology, Welsh Bards, Malory,
Gawain, Guenevere, Percival, Merlin,
Tristan & Iseult, and Elaine of Astolat.
