NOTES: See "Doubts About the Finley Line." My brother Josh points out there is no substantial evidence disputing the Finley family's own recognition of James McGrew as the husband of Mary Finley (i.e., it is not the conventional situation of the less established line claiming a dubious but convenient kinship), so this site will resolve the issue that way unless and until more solid evidence calls that into question.
Josh's notes and quotes from "Clan Finley": James Finley's father was Andrew Finley, who married Janet Hay. Janet Hay was the daughter of John Hay of Errol, Perthshire, and Janet Douglas. Janet Douglas was the daughter of James Douglas ("dark glass" - the family probably originated near a tarn). Aughenlyth, Forfashire is mentioned as the place Andrew got to before he died. Of Andrew, the Clan Finley document states (p. 22): "Andrew Finley son of John and Joneta (Rogers) Finlay had according to the rental books of Cupar Angus Abbey one fourth portion of Aughenlyth in Pentecost. In 1507 nappears as Sheriff Deputy of Cupar Angus in Forfashire and in 1542 was Sheriff. In that capacity he was associated with Donald and David Campbell grandsons of the Earl of Argyle Clan Campbell. Charter of Sale Jan. 1491 by Andrew Finley of Cupar Angus to John Stewart of Fothergill of lands of Achmamarkmore and this followed by a notorial document taken by John Finley son and heir of the late Andrew Finley dated April 27, 1547 of the rights and reversion of the land for twenty pounds payable in one day between sunrise and sunset."
The birth date is not in "Clan Finley," and came from a chart I should re-check.
