As you can see, your grades are up on MyHanover but I am unable to post the final gradebook until Monday. Please come by my office AFTER Weds 5/2, to get your papers and scantrons. If you would like to review the final exam packet, please make an appointment.
4/20/07
Exam III is now graded and posted. The Mean I listed Weds was in error, it was actually a very high 86.2%; range: 72 - 98% - nice job! Participation scores are now posted, as well. The course average to the right is still only an estimate until the papers are graded, but it does include both the final exam and P scores. Check MyHanover for your grades on Tuesday - I am not sure if the gradebook will be updated before Weds or not.
4/18/07
I have entered the points lost for missed classes beyond the 3 hours allotted (see attendance policy in syllabus). The average you see in the pink column, while taking account of 80% of the course, is still very rough because the final paper scores are not yet accurate. Expect it to change. Participation grades (making up the missing 20%) of the course will be posted by Friday; updated Final Project grades with Final Grades for the course will appear around next Weds or so. Course grades may be on MyHanover before that.
4/16/07
In order to facilitate your studying for the final exam (and perhaps to decrease your anxiety), I thought I would share the following information about how I have constrcuted the test. You will remember this is not a cumulative test, though understanding the rest of the course will help you to choose the best answer, if you are unsure. While you all know by now that everything we did in class and every reading assigned is potentially fair game, many items address material where the text and discussion (or the films we watched) overlap. The questions are drawn roughly evenly from all text chapters (ch. 13 - 17). However, there is slightly more emphasis on chapters 14, 16, and 17, and slightly less emphasis on ch. 13 and 15. There is only one question on the Brandt article. There will be 50 multiple choice questions (worth 2 points each; no short answer). Although most of you will be done within two hours, you will have the full three hours if you need it.
I will see you Wednesday, 9am, in our regular classroom. Please bring pencils w/an eraser and sit with a seat between each person.
Once again, it has been a pleasure getting to know you all during this course. You will see Participation Grades posted after the exam; Final Exam scores may be in the Gradebook as early as Thursday, however Final Project grades probably won't appear until 4/25 or so. Please remember to come get your graded papers, journals and scantrons at the start of Spring term. 4/11/07
Ok, as we discussed, these are slideshows from the text book. I have not edited them but they mostly serve as a good outline for the exam material.
Chapter 13
Chapter 14
Chapter 15
Chapter 16
Chapter 17
4/10/07
Yes, yes, you will definitely see slides here from the chapters since last exam! Unfortunately, it may take me another couple of days to post them.
4/4/07
The gradebook now reflects the updated changes to Exam II. As you may remember, I had already fixed items 12 and 32. After our discussion, I reviewed items 15 and 37. I will accept answer A on both of these, in addition to the correct answer, because the book's new edition is less clear. However, no other answers are being accepted. Particularly, answer B on item 15. Here, people were correctly remembering that some people fantasize to escape a dull or oppressive environment, but the book was talking about when people are at work or in class, NOT while they are having intercourse as the question indicated! So, I have adjusted the scantrons, your correct totals / grades are posted, and you should compare them to see what happened. I will bring them to Friday's discussion session and Monday's lecture.
Once again - remember that your paper is due at the start of class and will be marked off if you come in later (see assignment and syllabus for details on paper lateness).
4/2/07
The gradebook is now up to date for all JAs and paper-related submissions. I'll be handing back any JA5s I still have today. I have also updated the Exam II results, based on our class discussion. Please review the gradebook for both grades and attendance and let me know right away if you see anything you consider to be an error. Only documented medical excuses are recorded as 0.9, unexcused absences appear as 0s.
NOTE: Worksheet O is now posted below, scroll down.
3/30/07
I have made a decision about your additional sources for the final paper (thanks to James G. for prompting me to finalize this). Originally I had asked you to turn in a hard copy of the article you used external to the class materials. I assumed you would each choose one APA article which really addressed your topic. Some of you have been gathering various sources, including chapters and books. Obviously, I don't want that much material flooding in with your papers. So, please select one APA article that you used for your paper, and turn that in on hardcopy. I will return it to you with your paper, so you do not have to make any additional photocopies. So, while not everyone's most important reading will be the one from an APA journal, I figure those are likely to be the hardest to interpret, and I would assume you used them either for background, or in support of your argument, or to critique. However you used them, just give me the one you feel is most relevant to your paper. This is mostly a check on whether you interpreted your sources appropriately - in some cases it can help me clarify if/whether I think you have misunderstood something in the literature.
BTW, your papers will be available for you to pick up outside my office in May term. For those of you graduating and away during May, please leave me a self-addressed envelope.
3/27/07
The Gradebook is now up to date for the Progress Reports and Topic scores. Notice these total with your Journal Scores and Final Paper score for a complete Final Project Grade.
For whoever missed them, here are recent Worksheets:
Worksheet M On Body Image
Worksheet N On Sexual Disorders
Worksheet O On Sexual Enhancement - you'll recall I said that this one may provoke strong reactions and you may feel uncomfortable answering all questions. That is fine, but for those you do not wish to answer, please write at least a brief sentence about why that question is difficult for you to answer.
3/18/07
Your Exam II grades have been re-posted - I found an error in my scoring which means most of you gained a point or two. The average is actually higher than last exam: 83.6% - which is a B and the range is 72% - 97%. Excellent job everyone! We will review the exam in class, in addition to reviewing ch. 13.
3/15/07
Your Exam II grades are now posted. The average is about an 81% - great job! I am continuing to work on Progress Reports to provide you with feedback, as well as JA 5s. Please have ch. 13 read for Monday - see you then.
3/12/07
Ok, here are the last two chapters' ppts for this section:
Chapter 11 - Contraception/Birth Control
Chapter 12 - Pregnancy / Birth
3/6/07
This announcement applies to the third (Friday) D.S. ONLY. On 4/13, I will be out of town with the seniors at the Butler U. Undergraduate Research Conference where they will be presenting their senior projects. This was meant to be our last discussion session, so we will now terminate DS on 4/6.
3/5/07
Some of you requested that I post powerpoint slideshows [transparencies] whenever possible. Here are some .ppt files - you may have to download them to view, I'm not sure they will work on all computers. You must have PowerPoint to see them. Beyond that, I won't be able to help with tech glitches - let me know if this is useful:
Chapter 6 - Development [from class, has material from ch. 7 too]
Chapter 7 - Adulthood [from textbook]
Chapter 8 - Love, Intimacy and Communication [from textbook]
Chapter 9 - Sexual Expression [from textbook]
Chapter 10 - Paraphilias [from class]
2/21/07
SYLLABUS CHANGE: JA 5 was originally listed as due 3/7, but that is being changed. Because of this week's changes, we'll be reviewing the Buffy episode and JA 4 in Discussion Session after break, so I am pushing JA 5 back to being due in DS's on 3/13 (TU) and 3/16 (FRI). As with before, please click on this link - JA 5 - to write your Journal in Word.
2/16/07
Last reminder: the Vagina Monologues final performance is tonight - CFA 8pm, please sign in then respond to the JA 4 assignment (below) for next week's D.S. Speakign of which, I will be showing a video in the DS's next week so we will start right at the top of the hour.
2/14/07
For anyone interested in Existentialism, pop culture and issues of power and/or sadomasochism, there is a new supplemental article on our main course page by V. Burr (2003) - full text linked.
2/9/07
A couple of updates:
1. I am afraid I cannot post the MC scores until tomorrow the earliest. I will notify you here when they are in the Gradebook. I do believe I will have the SA scored by Sunday evening so we can go over the entire exam together on Monday. We will likely need Monday's class and part of Weds. for ch. 6, but read ch. 7 for Weds since we'll aim to at least start it then.
2. Journal Assignment #4 details are here.
3. The "Shelby Knox" DVD will actually NOT be on reserve after all. If you missed it or feel you will need to see it again for any reason, please contact me ASAP.
4. The publisher's response to our website problems is below:
Please have your students contact technical support. They should be able to help resolve these issues.
Technical Support: http://mhhe.com/support
Online Technical Support Site is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
2/7/07
Ok, here is worksheet F - please try to do it before next week's Tues/Friday's sessions. Again, you will not need to hand it in now, it's for discussion purposes and should go in your final Journal submission. We will discuss JA 3 and/or this material and/or more about Shelby Knox in D.S.: whatever the different groups decide.
By now, all paper topics should have been submitted over e-mail (you'll notice on the handout that all submissions are due by the start of class). If you did not yet submit a topic, OR if I responded to your submission indicating that your topic needed more thought / specifics, please do feel free to re-submit a topic over email or come talk to me about it further. Use my comments to start formulating a plan for researching your topic and starting your Progress Report, due 3/5. Once again, the Block book is due 2/19, it is important that you have that read to coincide with chapter 8.
2/5/07
SO sorry to have caused confusion: you will see the syllabus states JA 3 is due NEXT week (2/13 and 2/16) but I inadvertantly said below it was due tomorrow (this week's DS). So, I will accept you JA 3 on BOTH days (early - i.e., this week or ON TIME next week).
Meanwhile, here is the summary of our Sexual Scripts exercise from last week:
Sexuality Scripts
2/1/07
Once again, to avoid any confusion: if you see the gradebook's Final Project page and are wondering what it means, a 0.5 means you handed your journal in late, and a 1 means it was in on time, while 0 means I did not get it. Once I grade them with the checks, then 1 = check-minus, 2 = check, 3 = check-plus, while 0 still means I never got it.
1/31/07
For those who are eager to start JA 3 (due on Discussion Sessions next week, 2/6 and 2/9), here it is (I'm not photocopying them this time). Be sure to read the instructions carefully. As mentioned in class, JA 4 (due 2/20 and 2/23) will be on your reaction to the Vagina Monologues which everyone is to attend either 2/14 or 2/16. Again, I am still making up the exam, but I expect there to be about 50-55 multiple choice questions and about 15 fill-ins which includes both short answer questions and diagram items to label.
1/30/07
I am typing up the Sexual Script cards and would like to post your different anonymous Scripts on this page. I am wondering whether anyone has concerns about the sexual orientation issue. It seems to me that some of the scripts might make more sense if you know the orientation of the writer, but I do not know who is out amongst the class and peers, generally. Therefore, if you (whatever your orientation), would prefer that I put only the scripts and gender, but NOT indicate orientation on this list, please contact me (either through email or another anonymous card in my Green folder by my office). I will not post these until after the exam, so we have a few days for people to contact me.
Elizabeth would like to announce her online data collection for her senior project. Although I do not give extra credit in this class, you might consider taking this survey (to help a fellow psych major and to see one version of survey research). The requirements are that you be currently in a dating or engaged relationship, but NOT married.:
http://psych.hanover.edu/research/SeniorProjects/2007/BroadyHickman/
While we are on the subject, another senior is looking for online Participants:
http://psych.hanover.edu/research/SeniorProjects/2007/Recker/
This was passed on to me by Samantha - from the Madison Courier - for whoever is interested in raising healthy boys:
"Raising Cain," a documentary exploring the increasingly violent nature of American boys, will be presented at 5:45 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1 in the auditorium of the Madison-Jefferson County Public Library.
Mike McClure, internationally certified substance abuse specialist, is coordinating its showing, which is hosted by child psychologist Michael Thompson.
Thompson is co-author of the best-selling book "Raising Cain: Protecting the Emotional Lives of Boys."
The documentary, which premiered on Public Broadcasting Stations on Jan. 12, 2006, provides surprising new research about boys' inner lives and misconceptions that surround them, and focuses on innovative programs that are proving to "bring out the best" in boys, according to its producers.
1/29/07
I have received a question anonymously but did not have time to address it today. I plan to include it Wednesday - feel free to remind me (anyone) if I don't cover it before the end of lecture.
I hope at this point you have formed study groups and are busily preparing for the first exam.
Once again, National Freedom to Marry Day is being celebrated in the Campus Center on Tuesday, 2/6/07 at 12noon and 5:30pm with mock wedding ceremonies with a reception to follow at 7pm, all in the campus center lobby and alumni lounge/faculty dining room.
1/23/07
For anyone interested in the effects of sexual abuse on children and/or issues related to power and authority in religious institutions, there was a great documentary on Frontline last night, which apparently is viewable online at:
The Hand of God on PBS in Windows Media Player or Quicktime.
It seems to be laid out in chapters, so you can view short pieces at a time. It is about the sexual abuse scandel in the Catholic church in Boston which made headlines in the 90s and again around 2002. I recommend it highly.
1/22/07
Powerpoint slides are here from chapter 3 and chapter 4. Be sure to study the anatomy (both structure and function) and physiology (e.g., various cycles) in depth, as well as similarities and differences in the sexual response of males and females. Also, I am adding books to the library reserves, for anyone who is interested: Bernie Zilbergeld's The New Male Sexuality relates to ch. 4 and will have material related to other chapters as well as the Block book.
In additions, handouts from class in case you missed anything:
Worksheet E (please do for this week's Discussion Sessions).
JA 2 (due in Discussion Sessions next week)
Final Project Handout is on our Coursepage. Unfortunately, I do not have the Freud handouts electronically, so I'll bring more copies to class on Weds.
1/17/07
I posted our Password on the board today, but neglected to mention that you need it to access some of the articles on our coursepage. If you missed it ask me in class or ask a classmate.
1/15/07
Please be aware, I have changed my office hours. They are no longer on Tuesdays as indicated in the syllabus, rather they are MON and FRI at 3pm-4pm.
1/11/07
According to the McGraw-Hill folks,
the student registration code for SexSource Online is now working. The code I had been given was:
G8JR-Y9P7-TTEH-9487-THW4
Please try that and let me know Monday if you are/are not successful. You can watch the Kinsey video (narrated by Lorraine Bracco, as it happens), but it is somewhat redundant with the PBS "Kinsey" I'll be showing in class on Monday. I could not get the Evo Psych video to load but you should be able to at least watch "Beautiful" now. Some videos are in Windows Media Player, some are in Quicktime - it seems random. My guess is they are still putting the site together.
So, just to clarify: ch. 2 is due for Monday, JA 1 is due at next week's Discussion Section (TU or FRI) and Worksheet A and B (and all future worksheets unless I state otherwise) are for you to do now, we may discuss in TU/FRI meetings, but I won't collect until the end of semester so hang onto them.
1/9/07
There may be some difficulties with the SexSource online materials. While the pages I gave in the syllabus should open up, I am unclear whether you can access the videos. So far, I have been unable to. The publisher's rep is looking into the problem and will get us some information; she said that a student registration code is printed in the preface of the text and if all goes well the videos should be accessible starting tomorrow.
Please let me know if you have been able to watch any videos (I suggest you start with Ch. 1, "Beautiful").
In addition, there is a mistake in the syllabus. JA 1 and all Journal Assignments will be graded on a check system, not a 1-10 scale. Your Journal Assignments are due in Discussion Session (TU or FRI).
Finally, here is JA 1, for those of you who want to type your answers.
