4/27/07

Exam III's Short Answer scores are posted, as are the final paper and final project scores and the grades that have been submitted to the registrar.  Please come by my office to pick up your scantrons and papers.  If you would like to review the short answer or specific test questions, please make an appointment.

4/20/07

Exam III's scantron portion has been graded.  The mean was an unbelievably high 88.2% with a range of 80.5% - 98%.   Very nice job!  Short Answers seem to have given people more trouble - I'll get to those when I can but I don't think they will be posted before Tuesday.    Because I am still in the midst of grading Final Papers, only a few of those show up in the gradebook now.  Your current average shown takes account of as much of the FP as I have graded.  Stay tuned...

4/18/07

Exam III consists of 38 multiple choice, 3 matching, and 3 short answer questions.  Please remember that it is on ch. 9, 10, 11, Merskin, Yalom and the video, E volution of a Group (which is on reserve at the library).  Remember we omitted pages 439-455 from chapter 10.  In addition, although it is a very small section, I can tell you that I will not be testing you on 419-421 from chapter 9.  For the rest of chapter 9, it might make sense for you to set up a grid of the different group development models to highlight for yourself how the theories are similar and where they differ.   Be prepared to identify examples of these different models of Group Evolution in different groups.  You  might then try to think about the film and how the filmmakers labelled the different sections of the video and how those stages relate to the models in our text.

Once again, in terms of the articles, you should have a broad overview of each and be able to relate some of the specific aspects of each article which we discussed in class to the course concepts we've been studying.

4/17/07

The gradebook now shows your Presentation scores on the Final Project worksheet and that has been combined with the JA average to give you a weighted score.  Obviously, this grade will change once Final Papers are graded and figured into this average, but for now I have carried it over onto the Grades page and averaged it in for your current average for the course (pink column).

4/16/07

The gradebook now shows your Extra Credit points.  Please be aware that if you received fewer points than you were expecting, it is because your research summaries were not accurate.  If you see a 0 it is because you did not submit an E.C. form.

4/12/07

The gradebook is currently up to date for attendance and related penalties, as well as final paper submissions (i.e., that you submitted on time or late).  I hope to get Presentation Grades posted early next week.

4/2/07

I meant to mention this in class.  I have updated the gradebook as follows. Exam II Mult Choice is not out of 28 rather than 29. This, in effect, makes question #4 an extra credit question [it was the one whose answer was Member Maturity, a concept introduced later in the text].  In this way, you were not penalized if you got #4 wrong, but those who got it right don't lose the credit. So, basically everyone's grade on the scantron went up. Short Answers remain the same. What this means is the new overall mean for this exam is 86.8%, range: 68-100. So, we now have someone who got a perfect score on Exam II - great job! I have identified the changed columns in red.

Also, the Presentations List is under 3/5/07, below.

3/27/07

The JA4 grades are now posted and the average of all Journals has been transferred to the Grades page.  Remember, once your Presentation and Paper scores are factored it, that number will likely change, but for now it gives you a rough estimate of where things are at for your course grade.   Please do wrap up your extra credit participation and write up those summaries.  Attach them to the signed Extra Credit form and I will collect them Mon, our second to last class 4/9.

3/18/07

The Exam II grades are now posted.  The average is even higher than for Exam I - 84.2%, a solid B; range: 66%-97%.  Great Job, group!  We will review the exams at the start of class tomorrow, then review the Merskin article that is due (linked on our Vault Coursepage).  You will also notice in the gradebook an updated pink column (to the right) which gives an average of  your two exams and the journal scores thus far.  While the final weightings will be different, once we average in the Paper, presentation, Participation grades and Final Exam, you can at least judge where you are at in the course, gradewise, at the moment.  If anyone has concerns about their exam score or the course in general, please come see me (sooner, rather than later).  I will be working on your JAs this week and will get them to  you as soon as I can.

3/12/07

I just want to let you know that I am a bit behind in my grading, so you may not have your JA4s back until next week.  You should be able to continue working on  your final paper, nevertheless.  I am working on the exam, aiming to have that done for Friday.

3/8/07

I will not be able to grade the SA piece of Exam II till this weekend (the earliest) so I am posting the MC raw scores in the gradebook.  Remember, the % is only on the MC, your grade may go up or down, depending on your Short Ans scores.

3/5/07

Thanks for signing up for the presentations, you will be expected to present your paper at the time (in the order) you signed up for.  If you make changes, tell me so I can update this list.

It turns out that I neglected to cut out a few pages from chapter 8.  These pages are good for consolidating the concepts (so it was not a waste of your time to have read them), but I won't be testing you on them: p. 377-391.  Do, however, review the summary on 391-392.

Finally, you will notice that JA 4 is due this Friday - I meant to remind you in class.  We are moving quickly this month.  If you want to get ahead on your work after the exam, take a look at the articles linked on our course page, using our password, we'll be going over them soon.

3/4/07

Here are the ideas from our Brainstorming session.  We have already begun implementing some ideas.  If you have additional thoughts or just want to remind the class of ideas we have not yet incorporated into the class, feel free to discuss in class throughout the rest of the term.  I have graded your JA 3s (you should be able to see your score in the gradebook) and will hand them back tomorrow for us to review.  Remember, you may choose to keep the group you are discussing or the nature of the conflict confidential by changing identifying info/names, etc. in our discussion.  The point is to discuss how you are understanding conflict, transference (hangovers) and what you have learned about conflict resolution and group dynamics.

2/19/07

Just a reminder: please check the gradebook to see that it matches with your grades and attendance.  If you see errors, bring them to my attention at once.   Remember, the pink column listing your mid-term average is an approximation, but it should give you a good idea of where you stand in this course.  I will only submit grades to the registrar next for people who I am concerned about or otherwise are on the Must Report list.

2/7/07

     Hello, class!

I do not know that this fully explains my unconscious omission of reviewing our Exam I, but something related to the exam has come to my attention.  On the test, I said the matching was worth 2 points each.  I had actually intended to make them worth less than that, but I never changed the exam packet.  However, when I graded the short answer portion, I accidentally counted all four matching as 2 points, so that the short answer was out of a total of 9 points.  That is what has been posted to the gradebook up until now.   So, you can thank Ashley Bane for bringing this error to my attention: a powerful act of Leadership on her part!  She influenced me to go back and review what I had done.  Even tho I wanted them to count less, I do feel obliged to stick to what I wrote on the exam packet.

So, as a result, I have gone back and re-scored all your short answer pages.  Now, in the end it makes very little difference since so many of you had that portion of the exam perfect anyway.  In fact, only 5 people were effected.  But I want you to understand why the gradebook now lists the S.A. out of 15 points instead of out of 9.  The percentages now correspond to the corrected score.  So the final stats are:  The mean was 83.2% not, 83.3% and the range is 71%-100%.  Sorry for the confusion and we will START with the exam review on Friday, so I won't forget.

2/2/07

Following is more info on getting extra credit by participating in research studies conducted by Psych Seniors:

This is the one I mentioned in class; Stephanie Turner is looking for anyone who can give an hour to an hour-and-a-half.  As you know,  you can only get a maximum of 3% added to your final grade.  She writes:

The experiment is designed to examine students' perceptions and understandings about psychological differences between people.  Participants will fill out a few short surveys and watch a video about mental illness.  After they have finished filling out the surveys and watching the video they will be debriefed.  The length of the experiment may vary, so extra credit (if applicable) will be awarded for either 60 or 90 minutes, so it is a good opportunity for students to receieve a good amount of extra credit.  Participants should sign-up on the sheet outside of SCC room 147 if they are interested in participating.

And another Senior writes:

My name is Sarah Maurer and I am a senior Psychology major working on my Independent Study.  I am studying the effects of student involvement in extracurricular activities.  I'm asking you to please participate!

Please go to http://psych.hanover.edu/research/SeniorProjects/2007/Maurer/ and fill out the short questionnaire.  It won't take very long, and since my project is limited to Hanover students, I need as many participants as possible!

I'm also hoping that with the results of my project, I will be able to propose ideas to the administration on how to improve student life at Hanover, so your participation would be very helpful!  Thank you for your time, and don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions!

1/31/07

By the way, senior Psych students are beginning to post sign-up sheets on the bulletin board outside of SC-147.  For the traditional (i.e., not online) research, you need to bring your extra credit form to the research study and the Researcher will sign it afterwards.  You then need to write up the study summary as indicated on the form.  Save your extra credit form with all the summaries and signatures to submit to me during the last week of the term.

1/30/07

Your Exam I scores are now posted in the Gradebook.  Congratulations - there were NO Ds or Fs!  The mean was fairly high, 83.3% (range: 73%-100%).  Particularly impressive was how well you all did on the short answer page!  NICE JOB!  We will not have time to review the exams until next Monday, given that the film will take up both class sessions.  If you have any concerns about your exam grade or anything else in this class, please come talk to me.

1/29/07

Just a reminder, the first Journal Assignment is due Friday, 2/2, per our Final Project handout.  In addition, Chapter 5 is due this week - please read it carefully, noting the pages omitted on the syllabus.  Bring in questions to review since we will be watching a film and applying the concepts.  I do not plan to lecture much on this chapter and I will expect you to be able to apply the concepts to the action in the movie, "Twelve Angry Men."

The  following comes from Ashley Recker, a Senior Psychology major who is collecting data - you can get 0.25% extra credit by doing the online survey, then printing out the Extra Credit form (see my main page) and answering the questions on it for this survey.  Attach your debriefing as proof that you finished (instead of her signature):

My research project questionnaire is now up and running on the web.  The survey itself should take around 15 minutes to complete.   http://psych.hanover.edu/research/SeniorProjects/2007/Recker/
Thank you for your time and help.

1/15/07

Please be aware, I have changed my office hours.  They are no longer on Tuesdays as indicated in the syllabus, rather they are MON and FRI at 3pm-4pm.
