5/1/06

Your Final Projects and Final Exam scantrons are awaiting pick up outside my office.  If you would like to review the exam, come by office hours Tues and Fridays at 3pm.  Have a great Spring term!

4/24/06

Your Sub 3 grades, Final Project scores and Final Course Averages are now posted in the gradebook.  Course grades are based on the right-most column and have been submitted to the registrar.  I have carefully checked all calculations, however if you think you see some error, please come see me (with all your course work) after break.

As to Exam IV, the Mean (our highest yet) was 83.6% and the range was 57% to 96%.   Congratulations on a difficult exam!

Once again, it was a pleasure getting to know you all this semester, I hope we will see each other again in future courses.

4/21/06

The final exam (Exam IV) scores (raw and total %) are now posted in the gradebook, along with your Participation grades.  I will not have statistics on the final until Monday, but it appears the mean is around a B- / B.  Look for your final project grades on Monday.

4/19/06

As you all know, the final exam (Exam IV) will be given in our regular classrom (SC-108) on Friday, 4/21, from 2pm-5pm.  The exam consists of 54 multiple choice questions (no short answer), please bring a pencil.  Since this exam only covers Chapter 12, Essay #6, Rogers' and Cushman's articles and some general concepts, it will be similar to our other in-class exams.   Therefore, you will most likely not need the full time.   As usual, everything in our readings, lectures and videos may appear on the exam.

Participation scores will be posted as early as Saturday, possibly along with your final exam scores, but those may not be posted until as late as Tuesday.  Final Project grades also may be posted as late as Tuesday.  At that time, you will see your final average for the class.  Your actual course grade will be available in MyCampus after Tuesday.

4/16/06

The gradebook has been updated with all attendance and extra credit info.

Melinda Leonard's talk on a topic from neuropsychology will be this Monday (4/17) at 10am in room SC-147 (or there will be a note directing us to a different room).

4/11/06

A change has been made - we have a professor, Melinda Leonard, coming to give a talk on neuropsychology this Monday (4/17).  This will NOT receive extra credit, however if you can make it you are certainly welcome to attend; we value your input.  I will post the time and room when it is announced.

Please bring completed Extra Credit forms to class on Thursday.

4/7/06

The scores for Exam III are now posted.  This class had a rather high mean of 82.6%, range: 54% - 98%.  Great Job!  We will go over these exams on Thursday.

Please review the gradebook to check both that the grades you have on tests and submissions agree with the grades I have posted; also check excused absences and tell me if you see a problem.

Also, for those interested in majoring in Psychology, remember that Thursday 4/13, from 8am-10:30am the seniors will be presenting their research projects in room SC-147.  Please try to stop by for at least a portion of that time - you may get to see the results of the studies you participated in.

I look forward to receiving your Final Paper submissions on  Monday - there will be penalties for lateness!  We'll finish ch. 12 on Monday and discuss the Cushman article on Wednesday.

3/29/06

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.  I strongly encourage you all to go to as many of these events as you can, given the end of term.  This is one of those areas where psychological issues and social awareness go well together....

3/10/06

The registrar has scheduled our final exam on Friday, 4/21 at 2pm.  It is scheduled to run until 5pm.  While you may not need the full three hours, be careful not to schedule other things (e.g., airplane tickets, etc.) which will cause you to be stressed and rushed during your final exam for our class.  If you believe you have a conflict, contact the registrar or myself right away, as I have not been notified officially that any exams conflict with ours.

By the way, the Carl Rogers article which is due in a couple of weeks is on reserve at the library - you might want to make a copy for yourself to read and bring to class.  Please do not wait until the last minute.

3/7/06

I need to cancel office hours this Friday because we have a job candidate coming to visit the Psych Dept.  If you need to meet with me, contact me for an alternative time.  What this means for you all is that we have another opportunity for extra credit.  Professor Mullen will be presenting a teaching talk this Friday, 3/10 at 3pm, in room 147.  Bring your extra credit forms for me to sign and take notes so you can summarize her talk.  You will also be given an opportunity to evaluate her presentation at the end.  This is important so we can factor student feedback in to hiring decisions.

2/24/06

I have posted your Exam II grades in the gradebook.  What happened?  The mean for this exam was rather low, compared to last exam -- 71.4%, range: 50 - 96%.  I have analyzed the questions which were missed and there does not seem to be a pattern in terms of any particular question(s) giving people a hard time.  We'll go over these after break.

In addition, you will see that there is a pink column in the Grades page indicating your mid-term average.  These are approximate, based on the 2 exams and your Sub 1.  Note that once the later exams are added in your Final Project will be weighted less than it is now, so do not take these averages as any guarantee of your final course grade.  I have submitted grades to the registrar as needed.  Please contact me if you have concerns about this course.

    Enjoy your break!

2/22/06

I meant to remind you in class today that if you have questions about the material covered on Exam II, bring them in tomorrow, in writing.  I will address questions at the end of the hour.

For anyone interested in pursuing the mind/body issues raised in today's class, I highly recommend Jon Kabat-Zinn's books, Full Catastrophe Living and Wherever You Go There You Are

All first paper Submissions have been graded.   You can check the gradebook for your score (out of 20), on the page named Final Project.  Then check out the MyCampus Forum to see if I gave you specific feedback on your citation.  If not, you can review what I wrote to others since many of you had the same formatting errors.  Either way, please be sure to read my "Sub 1 Grading" post in that forum for more details.  Good job everyone!!

2/20/06

I meant to mention in class today that I have your first paper Submissions nearly graded, but a computer malfunction this weekend has delayed my completing them.  I hope to have them posted by Weds' class.  See you then.

2/10/06

There will be new studies you can participate in during the next few weeks.  Please remember to stop by room SC-147 to check the bulletin board and sign up.  Remember to get the researcher's signature and answer the questions on your extra credit form for each study you participate in.  I'll collect these at the end of the semester.

2/8/06

Related to our discussion of Learning theory and Punishment, here is the summary of psychological research on spanking:

APA.org on Spanking

I'll check the submission 1 posts on MyCampus over the next day or so.  Do not change them at this point since changes will appear as having been submitted late (on the time stamp).  I will try to post grades by early next week.  In the meantime, review your articles carefully, and start planning submission #2.

2/3/06

Exam I is now posted.  I had a calculation error in my file so the average was actually not a C but a B- (80.9%).  Good Job!  The range I told you was correct.  You can see your grade in the gradebook using the code you chose at the beginning of the term.  If you have concerns about your grade or anything else, please stop by office hours or contact me for an appointment.

As promised, here is a copy of the overhead from today in a Word file:

Types of Reinforcement

1/31/06

Exam I is now complete.  It has 43 conceptual and factual multiple choice questions and 10 short answer items for you to fill in.   As I mentioned, questions are drawn from all chapters, videos, and lectures but chapters 2, 3 and 4 are weighted more heavily than chapter 1 and Essay #1.  Please remember to bring pencils with erasers and a pen for the short answers.  Good studying!

Please remember that chapter 5 is due for Thursday.

For those of you who have begun posting Sub #1, so far they look pretty good (e.g., all the ones I checked are from APA journals).  Feel free to make any necessary formatting changes this week, I will grade the submissions as of 2/8/06.

1/26/06

Please remember that the article you choose for your final project must not be the same as anyone else's.  Therefore, the sooner you select your article and post it, the sooner you can be assured that no one else chose it (i.e., first to post get to do whatever they want, those of you waiting till the last minute may need to choose a different article).  So, go to the MyCampus Forum page and check what articles have been taken as soon as you can.

Also, the Career Center is presenting a panel entitled:

Counseling and Social Work Careers

Tuesday, January 31 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Science Center 107

Hanover alumni working in Counseling or Social Work careers will be on campus to talk about how they chose their career; what activities, internships or classes helped them; what a typical day might entail or anything else students would like to discuss.   If you are interested, please sign up in the Career Center (x7127) or write to them at careercenter@hanover.edu.

1/19/06

There is now a sign-up sheet for Research Participation (for extra credit) outside of room SC-147, on the bulletin board.  The seniors running it hope to schedule participants for next Tuesday, please sign up if you are interested.

I will periodically post events here which relate to psychology.  These are not for extra credit, but some offer cultural credit or would be helpful to you in career planning.  I will not always be able to attend such events, so if you happen to go to one and have questions or want to share what you learned, feel free to raise it with the class.

The following event should be interesting, it is presented by the Haq center.  We'll be talking about cultural aspects of psychology later in the term.

On Monday, January 23, William Lewis will give his presentation “Unpacking My Cultural Baggage” for Hanover’s student body. Mr. Lewis mixes humor, personal experiences and group interaction to help uncover how bias, stereotypes and prejudices impact individual interactions in the workplace.

The presentation is free to both the campus and the public and will take place in Horner Center, Room 102 at 7:00 pm. Students can earn cultural credit by attending this event.

For any potential psychology majors, you may find this interesting, it is being organized through the career center:

Englishton Park Presentation

Tuesday, January 24

7:00 PM

Newby Hall

Englishton Park offers challenging summer internships that help kids succeed academically and improve their outlook on learning.  Directors and counselors from Englishton Park will make up a panel to share their experience and answer questions. This is a great opportunity for psychology, sociology, and education majors, but everyone is welcome.  In addition, this internship offers:

  • $3,500 and free room and board
  • College credit from IU Southeast
  • Opportunity to develop great skills working with children

1/15/06

The Final Project assignment (Word file) has now been posted on our home page.  Please review it carefully.  I will bring hard copies to class this week which you should bring with you to our library session on Thursday.

1/13/06

The Gradebook (excel file) has now been posted.  Please check to see that you can view it - it has three pages which we'll be using throughout the term: Attendance, Grades, and Final Project.

1/9/06

The syllabus has now been posted.  Please be aware there may be some Extra Credit opportunities in the first week of classes.  The first job candidate, Robert Deaner, will give his talk on Tuesday, 1/10/06 at 4pm (in room SC-147).  It is entitled "The Biopsychology of Emotions."  The second, Prof. Warnick, will be here Thursday 1/12 and will also speak at 4pm in 147.
