Instructor: Ellen Altermatt, Ph.D.

GENERAL INFORMATION

We will be meeting in Room 108 of the Science Center every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10am to 11am for lecture/discussion and in Room 148 every Tuesday from 10am to 12noon for lab. My office hours for this course are listed on the syllabus. Please stop by! I'm happy to meet with you.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

My goal in this course will be to introduce you to the major theories and issues in the field of adulthood and aging. Our focus will be on normal social, cognitive, and physical development in the post-adolescent years. Topics will included aging demographics, research methods (including narrative research methods), emerging adulthood, social, personality, and cognitive development, and death. Special attention will be paid to the problems and challenges of growing older in contemporary society. The format will be largely discussed-based, with opportunities for hands-on learning during laboratory time. A research project is part of the required coursework.

The texts for this course will be Jeffrey Jensen Arnett's Emerging Aduthood (2004) and Ian Stuart-Hamilton's The Psychology of Ageing (4th edition, 2006). Supplemental course materials will be provided.
